A chance discussion on a breakfast show in Gosford in the late 90's, led to the establishment of a unique community-based fundraiser. An initiative which has changed the lives of thousands of Australian children and their families throughout Regional Australia.
After a parking station refused to accept 5 cent pieces as payment, the question was asked on-air, "what are 5 cent pieces good for?" A listener phoned in and suggested "why don't we collect all those useless 5 cent pieces – then donate the money to the Children's ward at the hospital?" So they did!
Give Me Five is a fundraising initiative supported by over 40 radio and TV stations across the country. For over 20 years, the month of June has been dedicated to raising much needed funds for local community hospitals as well as sick children and their families when they need it most.
