The Australian Longboard Surfing Open. started life as the 'Malfunction' in 1984, it was developed as a longboard surfing event to gather likeminded surfers. In 2012 the event was rebranded as the Australian Longboard Surfing Open. Consequently, the renaming opened opportunities to exploit the structure and content with greater audience offerings and community uptake. ALSO is now a multi-day celebration showcasing the longboard surfing lifestyle and tradition that has encouraged the development of long term repeat clientele. ALSO attracts past and current superstars, returning visitors for both long and short form stays. ALSO fosters a distinctive positioning where competitors intermingle with festival attendees that identify with and or are intrigued with aspects of the surfing lifestyle. Attendees are supplemented by enjoying the waves, music, cars, movies, and market stalls that encompass the event.

ALSO represents a unique five day differentiated surfing festival model with no near equivalents. ALSO consists of a range of family, social and sporting activities for everyone to be a part of. The competition programme has a focus on gender equity and includes, Open men's and women's professional longboard, Amateur men's and women's longboard, Stand-up paddle boarding, All-age amateur divisions (Juniors to Golden Oldies).
