Hinterland gearing up for a weekend of great events

What do pin-up girls, hot rods, artisanal woodworkers and crafted timber products have in common? They're all on show in two big events in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland this weekend - the Maleny Wood Expo and TimeWarp Festival.

Thousands of visitors are expected to flock to Palmwoods and Maleny for the two exciting lifestyle events.

The sound of rockabilly music, hot rods and motorbikes will hit Palmwoods at the third annual TimeWarp Festival on Saturday April 29, while everything wood will be on display at three days of country family fun at the Maleny Wood Expo on Saturday April 29 to Monday May 1.

Division 5 Cr Jenny McKay said the two events, proudly supported by Tourism and Major Events Levy, would be a great way to showcase the region.

"It's going to be fantastic weekend for the Hinterland and we are expecting thousands of locals and interstate visitors to make their way to Maleny and Palmwoods for these lively events," Cr McKay said.

"Events like these are also a great boost for the respective local communities and also local tourism and accommodation providers.

"The Maleny Wood Expo and TimeWarp Festival are also testament to the fact that the Hinterland can play host to some amazing events."

TimeWarp Festival event organiser Greta Cole said their visitors to their event could expect to experience everything "Kustom Kulture".

"Margaret Street and Ricks Garage will become the backdrop to a showcase of vintage, rockabilly, hot rods, bikes, pin-up girls, market stalls, bands, beards and much, much more," Ms Cole said.

"The Sunshine Coast has many small businesses, bands, car owners and pin-up girls in this theme and it's wonderful for them to be able to have something here on the Coast."

Ricks Garage operations manager Ben Jamieson said the Palmwoods business community was gearing up for a big weekend.

"TimeWarp is a fantastic opportunity for the local cafes, restaurants, shops and hotels to promote their business to a wider audience," Mr Jamieson said.

"Community groups including Palmwoods Rural Fire Brigade, Palmwoods Business & Community Association, Palmwoods State School and Palmwoods Scout Group also regard this event as their major fundraising event of the year."

Festival goers will have the chance to rock out to eight local and Brisbane bands, who are scheduled to perform at the event.

Organisers are anticipating 5000 visitors and a display of up to 200 classic bikes and hotrods.

The Festival runs from 10am to 5pm with parking available for a gold coin donation.

Maleny Wood Expo event organiser Steve McLeish said the Expo was now recognised as one of the best wood shows in Australia.

It promotes sustainable use of native timbers through the work of local and regional wood artisans

"Expo visitors can view an amazing range of lovingly crafted timber products, and meet and talk to the craftsmen and women who've created them," Mr McLesih said.

"We're also hosting a wide range of workshops, where visitors can be inspired and the learn the craft from passionate experts.

"With work by furniture-makers and toy-makers, musical instrument-makers and box-makers, whittlers, carvers and everything in-between, there's something to suit every taste and budget."

Mr McLeish said the Expo also proudly supported local businesses and suppliers.

"As much as possible, we source everything from local suppliers –from catering and event equipment to entertainment and fencing comes from local businesses," Mr McLeish said.

Gates are open daily from 8.30am to 5pm. Entry is $15, under-16s are free and concessions tickets are $12.
